Signs your hybrid battery is failing
Hybrid batteries usually give warnings before they quit. Here's what to watch for, and what to do next.
The most common warning signs
Warning lights
"Check Hybrid System," a red triangle, or the check engine light.
Code P0A80
"Replace hybrid battery pack." The car has found a weak block.
Gas mileage drops
The engine has to do work the battery used to do.
Charge gauge jumps
The battery bars swing from full to empty quickly.
Engine runs nonstop
The gas engine runs more, even at stops.
Weak acceleration
Less power when merging or climbing.
San Antonio heat makes it worse
Long stretches over 100°F wear hybrid batteries out faster. Keeping the battery cooling fan and filter clean helps your pack last longer.

About our diagnostic →Common questions
What does code P0A80 mean?
P0A80 means the car's computer sees a weak block in the hybrid battery. It's the most common sign the battery pack needs replacing.
Can I keep driving with a failing hybrid battery?
Usually for a short time, but mileage drops, the engine works harder, and the car can go into limp mode. Get it checked soon.
Is it always the battery?
No. Fans, sensors and other parts can cause similar warnings. That's why we start with a $100 diagnostic.
