Why San Antonio heat kills Prius batteries, and how we fight back
San Antonio summers regularly pass 100°F, and heat is the number one enemy of a hybrid battery. If you drive a Prius here, your battery works harder than one in a cooler state.
What heat does to your battery
- High temperatures wear battery modules out faster
- Weak modules run hotter and put stress on the rest of the pack
- A dirty or clogged cooling fan traps heat inside the pack
- One weak module drags down the whole battery
Batteries built for Texas
We don't patch a battery by swapping one module. Every pack on our shelf is rebuilt from scratch with tested, matched modules, so no single weak module overheats and drags the others down. When we install it, we also check the battery cooling system, because a clean fan is one of the best ways to protect your pack.
Protect your battery this summer
Vent
Keep the battery cooling vent near the rear seat clear. Don't block it with bags or pet hair.
Fan
Have the battery cooling fan cleaned if it has never been done.
Shade
Park in the shade when you can, especially in July and August.
Warnings
Don't ignore a warning light. Early service costs less.
